Description
Summary

Sediment samples were taken at the same 9 points in both September 1989 and February 1990 in the Gulf of La Spezia using a gravity corer. Microbial activity was measured in the surface layer (0-1 cm) of each sample using the resazurin reduction method. The organic carbon content and the principal porewater nutrients (N-NH3, P-PO4, total P, Si-SiO2 and N-NO3) were also determined. The porewater samples were obtained by dialysis in situ and standard methods were used for the nutrient analyses. The sampling points lack the exact geographical coordinates as the area considered was quite small and sufficient landmarks were present for reasonably precise positioning. The data set is provided with a map of the area showing the points sampled.
