Description
Summary

The aim of the Tyrrhenian Eddy Multi-Platform Observations experiment (TEMPO) was a detailed study of the circulation in the Tyrrhenian Sea with a multi-disciplinary approach combining in-situ measurements and remote sensing observations. The experiment involved researchers from Germany, United Kingdom, and Italy. It ran from 1989 to 1992. Vertical profiles of Temperature and Conductivity were collected in 67 stations during TEMPO 1 (from 26 September to 7 October 1989), in 43 stations during TEMPO 2 (from 16 to 22 February 1990), in 58 stations during TEMPO 3 (from 22 October to 11 November 1991) and 41 stations during TEMPO 4 (from 16 April to 5 May 1992). Geographical areas covered by the measurements were the Central and North Tyrrhenian during TEMPO 1 and TEMPO 2 experiments, and the Central and South Tyrrhenian Sea and Sardinia Channel during TEMPO 3 and TEMPO 4 experiments. Water samples were collected with a ME rosette at standard depths (namely: 0, 25, 50, 100, 150, 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, 3000 meters) at some of the CTD stations and analyzed for dissolved oxygen and nutrients. Oxygen was obtained on board by the Winkler method while the samples for nutrient analysis were stored at -20 degrees Celsius and transported to the laboratory where the principal nutrients were determined by a Technicon Auto-Analyzer II using standard methods. The data contain all the useful information for space and time location, and information on meteorological parameters during the collection.
