Description
Summary

During the WMCE the Stazione Oceanografica developed an observational program called the Janus Experiment, for the study of the water exchanges and characteristics in the Strait of Sicily. Three current meter moorings were deployed in the Strait of Sicily along the 13° E meridian from November 1985 to June 1986 (35.90° N, 12.93° E; 36.45° N, 12.98° E; 36.15° N, 12.98° E). Pressure gauges were deployed at Mazara del Vallo, Pantelleria and Lampedusa. An additional bottom pressure gauge was deployed in the middle of the strait. Wind direction and speed, atmospheric pressure, and temperature were collected by a weather station assembled aboard an oil tanker moored on the Sicilian shelf.
