Description
Summary

The straits of Magellan, a 550 km long V-shaped channel located in South America continent between southern Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans which have very different hydrological features. The presence of strong tidal current, the different precipation in a wide area and the fresh water inputs with the pecualiar morphology of the Straits make this area unique and show interesting scientific questions about hydrodynamic processes. In the frame of the PNRA a multidisciplinary oceanographic cruise was carried out from the Pacific to the Atlantic entrance of the Straits in the period 25th of March - 6th of April 1995 with the R/V Italica. A complete set of physical oceanographic data was collected using a Sea-Bird Electronics 9/1111 plus CTD coupled with Carousel water sampler and Sensor Data current meters.
