Description | |
Summary | The distribution of microzooplankton populations was studied during the first Italian cruise in the Strait of Magellan (November 1989). Microzooplankton samples were collected at 19 stations at three depths (surface, intermediate and bottom) with a Niskin bottle, filtered with a 10 micrometre mesh and preserved at 4 per cent buffered formaldehyde. It was possible to divide the Strait into three geographical areas, each of which was defined by different microzooplankton populations. The community structure at the Atlantic stations, and Primera and Segunda Angosturas had high density values made up prevalently by tintinnids. In the central area, total abundance was high mainly at the surface but there was a notable increase in micrometazoa, while at the deeper Pacific stations the community structure was very simple with low density values due to the presence of typical oceanic species. |
