The oceanographic, chemical, biological and microbiological properties of the Southern Adriatic coastal sea-waters and Varano lagoon are analyzed in the framework of monitoring program, concerning the purpose to determine the current state of the polluted ecosystems in relation to the conservation of its biological resources. The original data are analyzed, controlled by Institute and handed in to Apulia Administration submitting it to the Ministry group, charged with final reporting. The sampling station are situated at 500, 1500 and 3000m from the coast near the pollutant sources: harbours, canals, rivers, coastal installation, etc. The surveys of coastal waters quality are concerned with the seasonal periods (summer, autumn, winter, and spring). The data concerning the whole Apulian coast are supplied by 4 Italian institutions: a) CNR Istituto per lo sfruttamento Biologico delle Lagune, Lesina (FG); b) Laboratorio Provinciale di Biologia Marina, Bari; c) Istituto di Chimica Organica, Universita, Bari; and d) Istituto Talassografico Sperimentale, Taranto.
