Description
Summary

Data from the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) onboard the NOAA polar-orbiting environmental satellites are routinely downloaded at OGS using a Terascan receiving station system. These data are processed with the Terascan software and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) images of the Mediterranean Sea are created in near-real time. These images are posted on the world wide web typically within a few hour from the satellite pass for various geographical areas: the whole Mediterranean basin, the Adriatic Sea and the Gulf of Trieste. Acquisition: The OGS receiving station was programmed to automatically capture all satellite overpasses in view of the station with a minimum elevation of 20 degrees. The OGS station is located at 45N42.65' and 13E45.76' Processing: Sea surface temperature was calculated from the AVHRR data with the linear MCSST split-window equations provided by NOAA/NESDIS. MCSST refers to Multichannel Sea Surface Temperature; split-window indicates the use of data from channels 4 and 5 to calculate temperature and to correct for atmospheric attenuation due to water vapor. Posting: SST color-coded using a constant color palette stretched between temperature extrema obtained from monthly maps of the MODB climatology.
