The marine current data were collected in the frame of a research programme with the following main objectives: - to improve knowledge of the hydrodynamics of the strait at synoptic, seasonal and interannual time scales; - to estimate the exchange of water and associated material between the Adriatic and the Ionian Seas, and to evaluate their variability; - to increase understanding of the influence of the strait upon the adjacent water bodies; - to provide a consisent data set both for validation of the models and assessment of complementary programs. The moorings were deployed with 1, 2 or 3 current meters. The time series were recorded at a sampling interval of 20 minutes. The data are fully quality controlled for gaps, spikes and spurious data. The raw data are averaged over a 1 hour time interval and analysed to produce spectral analysis, tidal components and residuals. The data sets are stored as a raw time series for each current meter (1 data cycle of temperature, speed and direction every 20 minutes). The complete data set consists of 2710 current meter/days.
