Description
Summary

The specific pollutants parameters were considered in the framework of the multidisciplinary monitoring program of the Adriatic Sea scheduled to determine the current state of the ecosystem and pollution in relation to its basic hydrographic features and dynamics. Specific parameters considered as pollution indicators were measured in each of the important matrices: sea water, suspended matter and net plankton. The original data were controlled, analysed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal responsibility for quality control. Nevertheless before the dataset has been considered as part of the database it has been submitted to a group of experts charged with final data validation and reporting. The hydrographic stations were occupied during 6 seasonal cruises. Additional intercalibration cruise was carried out concurrently with different ships. 2 hydrographic surveys are concerned with the summer of 1983 and 1984; 2 with the autumn of 1979 and 1989; 1 with the spring of 1983; the latest cruise (spring 1990) was concerned with the special Dynamic Experiment in the Northern Adriatic Sea (NADEX) where 11 stations for PAH, 4 stations for heavy metals and 2 stations for chlorinated hydrocarbons were repeated for 3 days concurrently with CTD stations. The data are stored per station, per cruise, per specific filtered sample together with the detection limit of used methodology. Special forms and coded tables were prepared to arrange parameter name, numerical values, dimensional unit, accuracy and standards. The data set comprises over 500 stations where the samples have been collected and more than 2000 observations were performed. The data were supplied by 5 Italian institutions: Centro Ricerca Interdip. Scienze del Mare, Universita' di Bologna; CNR, Istituto di Biologia del Mare, Venezia; CNR, Istituto Sperimentale Talassografico, Trieste; Dipartimento Biologia e Fisiologia Generale, Universita' di Parma; Dipartimento Scienze Ambientali, Universita' di Venezia.
