Description
Summary

Heterotrophic bacteria need for their growth the presence of organic matter in the medium, so the quantitative determination is generally considered as a guide to the level of available organic matter. This determination was performed in different conditions of thermohaline stratification in the framework of the multidisciplinary monitoring program of the Adriatic Sea scheduled to determine the current state of the ecosystem and pollution in relation to its basic hydrological features and dynamics. The original data were controlled, analyzed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal quality control responsibility. The stations were occupied during 4 seasonal cruises. 2 hydrographic surveys were concerned with the summer of 1983 and 1984; 1 the spring of 1983 and last the autumn of 1989. All cruises were concerned with the Northern Adriatic, and the Middle Adriatic along the transect Pescara-Sibenik. The water samples were collected at three levels: surface, 20 m and on the bottom. The data sets are stored per station and cruise and are supplied by: Istituto di Microbiologia, Universita' di Trieste.
