Description
Summary

The hydrochemical and biological properties of the Adriatic open sea waters were analyzed in the framework of the multidisciplinary monitoring program of the Adriatic Sea scheduled to determine the current state of the ecosystem and pollution in relation to its basic hydrological features and dynamics. The original data were controlled, analyzed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal quality control responsibility. Nevertheless before the dataset has been considered as part of the database it has been submitted to a pre-processing procedure and the preliminary data products were submitted to the group of experts charged with final data validation and reporting. The hydrographic stations were occupied during 5 seasonal cruises. Additional intercalibration cruise was carried out concurrently with different ships. 2 hydrographic surveys were concerned with the summer of 1983 and 1984; 2 the autumn of 1979 and 1989; 1 the spring of 1983. All cruises were concerned with the Northern Adriatic (4 transects) and 1 transect (Pescara-Sibenik) in the Middle Adriatic sea, whereas the spring and summer cruises of 1983 comprise also the whole Middle Adriatic (3 transects) and the transect Gargano-Split. The data are stored as depth series per station, per cruise and ship (institution). Approximately 90% of stations coverage is concurrently with the CTD stations. The data set comprises over 230 hydrographic stations where the samples have been collected at standard depths and on the bottom. The data are supplied by 3 Italian institutions: CNR, Istituto di Biologia del Mare, Venezia; CNR, Istituto di Ricerche sulla Pesca Marittima, Ancona; CNR, Istituto Sperimentale Talassografico, Trieste.
