Description
Summary

The CTD data were collected in the framework of the multidisciplinary monitoring program of the Adriatic Sea scheduled to determine the current state of the ecosystem and pollution in relation to its basic hydrological features and dynamics. The original CTD/STD data were controlled, analyzed and worked up by the originator who holds the principal quality control responsibility. Nevertheless before the dataset has been considered as part of the database it has been submitted to a pre-processing procedure and the preliminary data products were submitted to the group of experts charged of final data validation and reporting. The high resolution vertical profiles of each station were averaged over 1 dbar pressure interval. The salinity has been computed according to the practical salinity scale of 1978. The averaged data are stored as depth series per station, per cruise and ship (institution). The CTD stations were occupied during 9 seasonal cruises. Additional intercalibration stations were carried out concurrently with different ships. 3 hydrographic surveys were concerned with the summer of 1983, 1984, 1991; 3 the autumn of 1979, 1989, 1990; 2 the spring of 1983, 1990; 1 cruise the later winter of 1991. The autumn cruise of 1979 covered only the Northern Adriatic, the other cruises covered the Northern, Middle and Southern Adriatic Sea. 2 cruises (spring 1990 and later winter 1991) were concerned with the special Dynamic Experiment in the Northern Adriatic Sea (NADEX). The data set comprises over 870 vertical profiles and includes data supplied by 3 Italian institutions: CNR, Istituto di Biologia del Mare, Venezia; CNR, Istituto di Ricerche sulla Pesca Marittima, Ancona; Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale, Trieste.
