Description
Summary

The size of the recruiting year class of Blackwater herring is used to review the pre-season TAC. The estimate of recruitment is obtained from the November survey. Approximately 30 hauls are undertaken in the Thames Estuary and River Blackwater. Length measurements of the catch are taken as are otolith samples for age determination. Herring are identified as to stock origin and from this the relative size of the recruiting year class of Blackwater herring is obtained. This is then used to update the seasonal TAC set at the beginning of the fishery, the season opening on 1 October each year.
