Description
Summary

Measurements in the area of the confluence of Brazil and Malvinas currents (SW Atlantic Ocean) of the CONFLUENCE programme are designed to study current transport, ventilation of thermocline, front dynamics. The programme is divided into 3 phases : Pilot phase (1988-91), Intensive phase (1993-96), Monitoring (1997 onwards). The CONLUENCE programme is a cooperation between 3 institutes : LOCEAN (Univ. Paris 6-France), LDGO (Univ. Columbia-USA) and Servicio de Hydrografia Naval (Argentina). Three cruises have been carried out during the pilot phase, on board of Argentinian and French ships. The corresponding data set includes physical and chemical measures at sea and current meter data. Each team has been responsible for the validation of the data sets collected with its own instruments. The CTD and current metre data collected by the French team have been calibrated and validated according to the usual LOCEAN procedures : calibration of pressure, temperature, current at the IFREMER Brest facilities and calibration of conductivity and oxygen sensors with water samples taken at sea. Processing of the data with the LOCEAN software. Three cruises have been carried out during the intensive phase. Three cruises of moorings launching and recovery have been carried out during the Monitoring phase.
