Description
Summary

Its main purpose is to provide an abundance estimate of the North Sea herring (Clupea harengus) population via hydro acoustic surveying. The estimate is used as a tuning index by the ICES Herring Assessment Working Group (HAWG) in its assessment of the North Sea herring stock size, thus contributing to management advice. The survey is carried out annually in June-July, covering both herring spawning period and spawning area in the North Sea, Skagerrak and Kattegat. Sprat (Sprattus sprattus) is also a target species, but the abundance estimate is not used for the stock assessment. In recent years a strong ecosystem approach has been developed monitoring also birds, plankton and hydrography.
