Description
Summary

This programme, (also carried out in collaboration with the Regional Health Inspectors and the Public Health Laboratory) ran on a regular weekly basis from the 3rd Week of May to the 3rd Week of October (the official bathing season for Malta). Throughout this period, 87 official bathing sites were monitored. All sites are monitored for Faecal Coliforms every week and once every fortnight all sites are monitored for Total Coliforms (as per EU Directive for Bathing Water) and Faecal Streptococci. If the bathing water quality is found to be of risk to bathers, this unit issues health warnings, identifying the localities where bathing would be temporarily not recommended. Samples from these effected sites are collected on a daily basis until three consecutive results within the recommended levels of microbial counts. At the end of the bathing season data analysis on all sample results is carried out for site classification as required both by the Barcelona Interim Criteria for the Mediterranean Sea and the EU Directive for Bathing Water. This unit publishes a detailed annual report with all the respective information and data analysis.
