Description | |
Summary | The survey area extended in an east-west direction from the Georgia shoreline to about 30 nil offshore and in a north-south direction from the southern border with Turkey north to the force major line bordering the contested area offshore of the Abkhazia region. The oceanographic vessel R/V K. PIRI REIS, operated by the Institute of Marine Sciences and Technology of Dokuz Eylul University, Izmir, Turkey, was used during the survey. The baseline survey was conducted by a team of U.S. and Georgian scientists and specialists and assisted by the survey vessel’s crew. The primary purpose of the survey was to develop baseline environmental information to support an Environmental Impact Assessment for a planned exploratory drilling program. The project provided collection of following information: data of hydrographic profiles of the water column, chemical and biological analyses of water samples, and chemical and biological analyses of sediment samples, chemical composition of sediment samples. granulometrical composition of bottom sediments, determination heavy metals and petroleum hydrocarbons in sediments. Part of water chemical analyses was carried out on the board; collected sediment and water samples was packaged and labeled for transportation to laboratory. Overall, in the survey area more than 140 sea water samples and 74 sediment samples were taken from 75 stations. The concentration of suspended solids is determined by gravimetric method, after filtration. |
