Description
Summary

The 1st Pilot Monitoring project is being implemented by Commission for the Protection of the Black Sea against Pollution. Objective of the study is collection and analysis of environmental data and provision of expertise in biological and chemical monitoring. For marine expedition ship of Batumi Monitoring and Prognostication Center “ECO-DELFIN” was used. Scientific Firm GAMMA provides the physical and chemical analyses of sediment samples. The sediment samples collected from 5 sampling sites during the pilot monitoring exercise are also analysed by the Marine Environmental Studies Laboratory, IAEA, Monaco, for comparative purposes and to provide results for parameters. Field survey was carried out in June 2006. The following parameters have been analysed in bottom sediments: grain size (particle size analysis), extracted organic matter (EOM), total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH) and metals (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn). Results/report of the study has been sent to the Black Sea Commission. For determination of metals (Ag, Al, As, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mn, Ni, Pb, V, Zn) atomic absorption, atomic emission, spectrophotometer and titration methods were used.
