Rock dredges

Data are collected to provide details of landings per unit effort in the lobster and crab fisheries. Using F44 forms (mainly east coast ports), paid collectors recorded the total number of days fished, the number of pots set and the weight or numbers of edible crabs, lobsters and crawfish landed for each vessel. Using logbooks (1970 to 1984) South West and Wales, skippers (all volunteers, but paid an honorarium) returned completed logsheets containing details of their daily effort and landings by species. From 1985 onwards there was an expansion to include volunteers on the East and South coasts. Currently there are approximately 40 volunteers representing some 25 ports in England and Wales. An assurance has been given to all participants that individual details and landings will not be divulged.
