Description
Summary

In the Dutch part of the Western Scheldt and in the Belgian Sea Scheldt the ecological development can be followed by monitoring the fish populations. The area has a nursery function for young fish and is a transition zone for migratory fish. Sampling is annually carried out in spring and autumn using an anchor net (8 m wide, 18 mm mesh size in cod-end) on four pre-defined locations in the Western Scheldt. All species are sorted from the catch, fish is measured, counted and weighed, other species are counted and weighed. The sampling is part of the Water Framework Directive fish monitoring for Rijkswaterstaat. In connection, sampling at the Belgian part of the Scheldt is carried out in spring, summer and autumn, using the same fishing methodology.
