Description
Summary

Extensive parts of the Netherlands lie below sea level. Due to this fact, many parts are susceptible to flooding. In order to prevent floods there is a continually search for new methods to protect the coast. In the "Sand Motor" pilot project the coast will be protected by making the sea our ally. The Sand motor is a huge volume of sand that will be applied along the coast of South-Holland at Ter Heijde. Trailing suction hopper dredgers deposit sand from the sea onto land. Influenced by wind and water the sand naturally spreads along the coast. Baseline studies were carried out to determine t0-situation. Benthic dredge samples (114) has been collected for data on the infauna in order to get a good impression of the diversity, total density and biomass of the benthic species. A monitoring program is set up to examine the impact on and recovery of the benthic communities in this area.
