Description
Summary

This dataset consists of marine habitat information on scallops grounds. The habitats are classified according to the European Nature Information System (EUNIS). The EUNIS habitat classification is a comprehensive pan-European system to facilitate the harmonised description and collection of data across Europe through the use of criteria for habitat identification. It is hierarchical and covers all types of habitat types from natural to artificial, from terrestrial to freshwater and marine. Scallops habitat extent and characterisation covers an area along the south coast of Ireland. The data was acquired by Ireland’s national seabed survey (INSS) during 2001. Data created from the interpretation of multibeam echosounder backscatter and bathymetric data. The data are being used to aid in the management of the herring fishery off the south coast of Ireland. Data was collected under the INSS programme jointly managed by the Geological Survey Ireland and the Marine Institute. Data completed for the habitat surveys completed.
