The National Wave Metric Network consists of 14 TRIAXYS buoys, deployed along the Italian coast, on a seabed 100 meters deep (La Spezia, Alghero, Ortona, Ponza, Monopoli, Crotone, Catania, Mazara, Cetraro, Ancona, Civitavecchia, Palermo, Punta della Maestra and Capo Comino).

RON (Rete Ondametrica Nazionale) - The Italian National Wave Metric Network was activated in 1989, initially with eight pitch-roll type directional buoys. In 1999 other buoys were added to the previous network of 1998, reaching ten measurement stations. From 2002 the number of stations reached 14, with data transmitted in real time; initially via the internet, RAI Televideo and Global Telecommunication System (GTS). From the third quarter of 2002, the network consisted entirely of TRIAXYS directional wave metric buoys, manufactured by the Canadian company Axys Technologies Inc., with modifications made to meet the particular needs of RON. The Network is now able to manage all types of wave meter now used in Italy. In addition, the Network will also be the main framework for tsunami wave study in the central Mediterranean Sea, and an early technological platform to study low-frequency sea motion detected in open sea using high-precision, multichannel, multisatellite GPS/Glonass/Galileo receivers and sea bottom instrumentation equipped with nano-resolution pressure sensors.
