This data set has been collated from data sampled at the following five coastal sites monitoring sites; Findon (near Aberdeen), Mallaig, Loch Ewe, Scapa (Orkney Islands), Clift Sound (Shetland Isalnds), Cromarty Firth, Loch Maddy(Outer Hebrides), Newburgh(Aberdeenshire), Millport and Fair Isle. Only temperature data is sample at Findon, Millport and Mallaig. Data monitoring began during 1996 at the Findon site and during 1999 at the other four sites. The temperature data are recorded every 60 minutes at Mallaig and at every 30 minutes for the other 4 sites. The salinity and nutrient data are collected once a week. Checks are made in the temperature records for spikes and spurious data. Any dubious salinity or nutrient data are rejected. In addition, phytoplankton samples are collected at Scapa, Clift Sound and Loch Ewe sites. These samples are taken weekly from March - October and less frequently (fortnightly or monthly) during winter months.
