Meteorological packages

The POSEIDON weather forecasting system has been developed in the framework of the project “Monitoring, forecasting and information system for the Greek seas”. Its central component is the SKIRON/Eta model, which is a modified version of the Eta/NCEP model. The Eta model is well-documented and detailed descriptions of its dynamics and physics components can be found in several studies. Currently, POSEIDON provides daily 72-hour forecasts in two different model domains and resolutions (10 and 24 km). The coarser model domain covers an extended area including most of Europe, Mediterranean Sea and N. Africa, while with the finer grid increment the model is integrated over the Eastern Mediterranean. During the 3-year POSEIDON-II project, ending in 2008, the weather forecasting component has been upgraded with the non-hydrostatic version of the Eta model which can be initialised with LAPS analysis.
