Description
Summary

The overall objective of the KEYCOP project is to understand and model the processes that determine the flux of carbon, nutrients and trace substances in the water column and sediment in different hydrographic regimes. The project is based round a series of hypotheses focusing on: i) The importance of turbulence in controlling small-scale plankton processes and interactions ii) The effect of stratification and nutrient pulsing on vertical particle flux and the microbial loop iii) The effect of mixing on plankton community structure and material fluxes iv) The interplay between plankton production, organic matter and trace metal speciation v) The importance of lateral processes in controlling sedimentation rates and water-sediment interactions. During 1999 and 2000, spring and summer field campaigns have been carried out in two contrasting semi-enclosed European seas, the Skagerrak and the Northern Aegean. These are complemented by one-dimensional modelling studies (General Ocean Turbulence Model, GOTM, coupled with European Regional Seas Ecosystem Model, ERSEM).
