A Special Protection Area (SPA) is a designated protected site under the EU Birds Directive. This dataset cover the statutory list of SPA's surveyed and designated. Geographic coverage of SPA's include the Republic of Ireland and coastal areas. Data on SPA designation has been ongoing since 1985. The necessary SPA survey work on birds has been undertaken by the National Parks and Wildlife (NPWS). SPA designation supports the designation of protected sites for rare and vulnerable bird species. Data completed as per release by NPWS June 2017.
