Description | |
Summary | A Sub-bottom profile aims to identify and characterise layers of sediment or rock under the seafloor. These systems can be helpful in locating hard objects buried beneath the seafloor shallow sediment layers. In sub-bottom profiling, a sound source directs a pulse toward the seafloor. Parts of this sound pulse reflect off the seafloor, while other parts penetrate the seafloor. The portions of the sound pulse that penetrate the seafloor are both reflected and refracted as they pass into different layers of sediment. Shallow seismic sub-bottom profile (Pinger) data provides information on the shallow soft sedimentary layers of the seafloor. This dataset provides details of the sub-bottom profile mapped under both the Irish National Seabed Survey (INSS) and INtegrated Mapping FOr the Sustainable Development of Irelands MArine Resource (INFOMAR) programmes. Sub-bottom profile data from INFOMAR surveys have been collected in foreshore and offshore waters around Ireland. Sub-bottom profile data has been collected since 2000 and is set to continue until 2025 under the INFOMAR programme. Sub-bottom profile data has been collected using a Sub-bottom Profiler and processed using Coda software. Sub-bottom profile data has been collected to gain knowledge and information on the geology of the seafloor. The (INFOMAR) programme is a joint venture between the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) and the Marine Institute (MI). The INFOMAR programme is the successor to the INSS and concentrates on creating integrated mapping products related to the seabed. The shallow seismic sub-bottom profile coverage not yet 100% complete for the Irish zone that is planned to survey up to 2025. |
