Ocean models

The Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) is a free-surface, terrain-following, primitive equations ocean model widely used by the scientific community for a diverse range of applications. The operational Connemara model was an implementation of the ROMS model for the greater Galway Bay area. The Connemara 2D dataset contains two-dimensional parameters output by this model, namely: (zeta) Sea Level Height (m), Barotropic Sea Water X Velocity (m/sec) and Barotropic Sea Water Y Velocity (m/sec). The Connemara model covers the greater Galway Bay area within the North Atlantic Ocean along the west coast of Ireland. The horizontal resolution of the model grid is approximately 200 metres. Model data is available for the previous 30 days and 3 days into the future. The Connemara model was an operational model forced by operational atmospheric (ECMWF) and boundary (operational North-east Atlantic model) forcing. The Connemara operational system provides a daily 3-day forecast and a weekly 7-day analysis. The Connemara model was run to forecast oceanographic parameters such as temperature, sea level and currents level for Galway Bay to support a variety of end-user services such as marine search and rescue. The Connemara model has been run by the Oceanographic Services team within Ocean Science and Information Services division of the Marine Institute (Ireland). Model data operational and producing output for days model has run to completion.
