Description
Summary

The site in Newport has a history of rearing and rancing salmon and trout. Commercial rearing of salmon smolts took place from the early 1980s until 2007 and sporadic rearing of other stocks (ie. rainbow trout, char) has been carried out over the years. Ranching salmon commenced in the early 1960s and is continued. Ranching provides an independent assessment of marine survival and exploitation and also supports the rod angling fishery in Lough Furnace. Data collected with Fish Husbandry includes: Fish mortality, Fish batch weights, Fish stock numbers, Fish feed information, Fish grading information, Broodstock: numbers, stripping dates, fecundity, fish health data and Salmonid ova. Data collected with salmon ranching programme: Salmonid ova, Micro-tagging information, Salmon smolt and Adult trap returns.
