Description | |
Summary | The dataset consists of radial and total velocity fields of the surface current in the North-Western Tyrrhenian Sea and in the Ligurian Sea. The dataset contains near real time radial and total velocity fields averaged over a time interval of 1 hour around the cardinal hour and reprocessed radial and total velocity fields averaged over monthly time intervals. Surface current velocities estimated by HF Radar are representative of the upper 0.3-2.5 meters of the water column. Radial velocities are measured on a radial grid with azimuthal resoultion of 5 degrees and range resolution of 1-1.5 km, depending on the radar operating frequency. Total velocities are derived using least square fit that maps radial velocities measured by individual sites onto a Cartesian grid with spatial resolution of 1-3 km, depending on the radar operating frequency. These total fields represent the horizontal components of the surface currents on a regular grid in the area of overlap of two or more radar stations. |
