Description
Summary

On behalf of the Ume-Vindelälven water management association, ALcontrol, in collaboration with Medins havs och vatnkonsulter AB, compiled and evaluated results from the recipient control in Umeälven and Vindelälven in 2016. The purpose of the surveys is to follow long-term changes in the Vindelälven and Umeälvens water quality and assess the impact of emissions, land use and air pollution. Members of the program are municipal water and sewerage facilities, water regulation companies, industries (including paper mill, sawmill, engineering industry) and fish farms. The Ume River catchment area is affected by diffuse emissions from primarily forestry and airborne pollutants. Emissions from point sources occur from municipal treatment plants, industries and fish farms. In some tributaries, the mining industry is most likely the largest individual emissions of metals. Locally, agriculture and individual sewers can also be important for impact in smaller watercourses and lakes. Measurements began in 2000 and are carried out at 6 sites. Sampling starts in March each year and continues for about 6 months. Parameters measured include temperature, dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, nitrite/nitrate, phosphate and ammonia.
