Description
Summary

This dataset consists of measured pH and modelled iron speciation values in the phycosphere of single nano- and micro- marine phytoplankton cells. A pH-sensing nano-probe was used to detect changes in pH, set up in position using scanning ion conductance microscopy, within the phycosphere of two diatoms (Coscinodiscus wailesii and Coscinodiscus radiatus), one green algae (Chlamydomonas concordia) and one coccolithophore (Emiliania huxleyi) species stored in artificially prepared seawater of differing pH (in the range of 6.00–9.00). The changes in pH were used to investigate iron speciation, and therefore iron availability, to phytoplankton. The results from this project aim to provide a new view on the fundamental processes in iron acquisition by phytoplankton. The data collected from this project were funded by the NERC Discovery Science grant "Controls on iron availability to marine phytoplankton" (grant reference NE/V01451X/1 and NE/V01451X/2), awarded to principal investigator Dr Fengjie Liu at the University of Liverpool and Imperial College London, Grantham Institute for Climate Change. The BODC accession number for this dataset is GRA240684.
