Description
Summary

The Broad Fourteens study area, characterised by large tidal currents, moderate wave activity and regular, well developed sandwaves, is located approximately 40km off the Dutch coastline. Data were collected on RRS Challenger cruise 87, which had the following objectives: measurement of near- bed turbulence; vertical current structure; waves (especially directional spectra) and currents at two sites separated by 10km; determination of wave and current dissipation; measurement of suspended sediments; measurements of bedload transport; study of turbulent bursting events; observation of the response of bedforms to bottom stress and determination of drag partitioning over bedforms. The data collected in support of this include 10 moorings each deployed for 7 days at two sites separated by 10km and aligned with the average tidal flow directions. Moorings included STABLE, bottom mounted ADCP, current meters, waverider buoys. Fluorescent sand was released during a tracer experiment and grab samples of sand obtained subsequently. Wave data were also obtained using the secondary navigation on RRS Challenger. Meteorological data were also collected. CTD profiles were taken hourly over a 13 hour period. A side-scan sonar and echo-sounding survey was carried out.
