Description
Summary

This BIOPOLE dataset comprises of seawater measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC), nitrogen (PON) and phosphorus (POP) collected in the Bering and Chukchi Seas during September 2023. All seawater was collected via CTD/Niskin rosette cast with sampling depths at the surface (<5 m), midwater (~30 m) and near seabed. Seawater was collected into acid-rinsed carboys directly from the CTD using Nalgene tubing. For POC/PON up to 1 litre of seawater was filtered onto pre-combusted glass fibre filters. For POP up to 1 litre of seawater was filtered onto pre-combusted and acid cleaned glass fibre filters. Measurements were collected within the context of the annual Distributed Biological Observatory-Ecological Fisheries Oceanography Investigations (DBO-EcoFoci) cruise (SKQ23-12S). Particulate biomass concentrations for POC, PON, POP and the natural isotopic abundances of carbon and nitrogen are presented. This dataset aims to identify the cause of excess of the nutrient phosphorus exported from the Arctic and will focus on the role of pelagic denitrification as well as the coupled responses of lower trophic levels. BIOPOLE is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), part of UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), under the National Capability Science Multi-Centre award scheme (NC-SM2) and is made up of five National Capability providers: the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), the UK Centre for Ecology and Hydrology (UKCEH), the British Geological Survey (BGS) and the Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM).
