| Description | |
| Summary | This collection comprises of CTD, Underway, LADCP and VMADCP data collected during the DY158 cruise in the South Atlantic Ocean, the Weddell Sea and the Scotia Sea between December 2022 and January 2023. LADCP data were collected from a downward-looking Teledyne RDI Workhorse Monitor 300 kHz ADCP and an upward-looking Teledyne RDI Workhorse Sentinel 600 kHz ADCP. CTD casts were undertaken with a 24-way Stainless Steel CTD frame with 24 off 20l OTE water samplers. Dual SBE 43 dissolved oxygen sensors were used and the temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen sensors mounted to the vane were connected to the secondary channel. The WETLabs BBrtd sensor was mounted in a horizontal orientation on the vane and a SBE35 was mounted on a vertical stanchion of the CTD frame. Underway measurements of position, heading, speed from GPS/gyro/log; temperature, salinity, chlorophyll a fluorescence, optical beam transmission were collected from the uncontaminated seawater supply and sensors under the ship's hull; air temperature, humidity, sea level pressure, wind speed and direction, solar radiation from sensors on mast; and bottom depths were collected from an EA640 single-beam echo sounder. These datasets aim to improve the understanding of Southern Ocean circulation, with specific focus on the mechanisms that transfer heat and carbon across the sea surface and into the ocean which will in turn support improving climate predictions and simulations. These datasets were generated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) under Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Grant Reference NE/W004933/1. The data are archived at the British Oceanography Data Centre (BODC). |
