Description
Summary

The resource consists of geochemical and physical datasets. It includes physical parameters (particle size, bulk density, moisture), mineralogical data (XRD), and extensive chemical characterization (ICP-OES/MS, XRF, LECO combustion, and total mercury analysis). The data covers the Northumbrian River Basin District coastline in Northeast England. The spatial coverage is scattered, targeting high-interest sites of legacy mining waste deposition from Holy Island in the north to the Tees Estuary in the south. High-resolution sampling was conducted at specific "hotspots," including: Blast Beach, Hawthorn Hive, Easington, and Horden Beach (Co. Durham), and Lynemouth and Cambois (Northumberland). Temporal coverage reflects post-storm impact monitoring. Samples were collected between January and July 2024, following the extreme erosion and inundation caused by Storm Babet (18–21 October 2023). Data were acquired through field sampling by using standardized environmental protocols. The data were collected to investigate the remobilisation and pollution risks of unprotected coastal mining wastes. The primary goals are to quantify the absolute flux of contaminant metals to the North Sea post-Storm Babet and to evaluate the geochemical behavior (e.g., oxidation) of newly exposed legacy wastes to inform future shoreline management plans. The datasets were produced and interpreted by the StormFlux project team (NERC Project Reference: NE/Y006518/1).
