| Description | |
| Summary | AGILE: Providing rapid evidence-based solutions to the needs of environmental policy-makers is a 5-year (2022-2027) research project, funded by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC). As part of this project a MATLAB Toolbox was created for a North Sea Ecosystem Baseline Assessment of the Endurance CCS (carbon capture and storage) site in the North Sea. The toolbox enables processing and validation of satellite-derived datasets, calculation of phytoplankton phenology metrics, analysis of long-term ecosystem variability, estimation and analysis of surface-ocean “blue carbon” indicators and correlation analysis between ecological metrics and environmental drivers. Representative toolbox inputs and outputs were generated using custom MATLAB R2024b scripts (https://github.com/annarufas/matlab-ecological-baseline-assessment-toolbox and 10.5281/zenodo.18647639) and span from 1997 to 2024, in waters surrounding the United Kingdom and Endurance CCS site in the North Sea (North Atlantic Ocean). The model uses data from three main platforms: marine automated measuring buoys operated by the UK environmental agency CEFAS (Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science), in situ HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) data, and satellite observations of ocean colour. The outputs produced include global and regional chlorophyll-a concentration in the 300 m, 1 km and 4 km scale, organic carbon concentration (BICEP (Biological Pump and Carbon Exchange Processes) Net Primary Production (NPP)) in the 9 km scale and pH, from sources including in-situ observations and satellite (OLCI (Ocean and Land Colour Instrument), Aqua-MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer), VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) and OC-CCI (Ocean Colour Climate Change Initiative)). The data were generated under the AGILE project under reference NE/W004976/1, by scientists at the University of Oxford. The overall aim of the research for project AGILE is to enable transformational change in the way high-quality interdisciplinary research informs decision-making on managing the natural environment in a rapidly warming world. |
