| Summary | This dataset contains turbulent kinetic energy dissipation data from two high frequency Teledyne RDI Workhorse Sentinel 600 kHz ADCPs deployed at a nominal depth of 75 m on two separate moorings in Cape Cauldron off the coast of South Africa. The moorings were deployed during research cruise RR2302, mooring 1 was deployed on the 22nd of March 2023 at -37N 09.611’ 16E 03.385’, and mooring 2 was deployed on the 17th of March 2023 at -35N 58.366’ 13E 28.593’. They were recovered on research cruise MGL2403 on the 3rd of April 2024 and the 2nd of April 2024, respectively. The ADCPs were set to run in Mode 5 p2p coherent mode collecting beam co-ordinate velocities with an ambiguity velocity of 10 cm, and one 5-minute measurement window every 2 hours. Structure Function (SF) methods were used to process the data following ATOMIX (Analysing ocean Turbulence Observations to quantify MIXing) guidelines. This dataset aims to help quantify the leakage of heat and salt via submesoscale features as part of an oceanographic research initiative that studies ocean mixing and Agulhas leakage in the Cape Basin. A region of high eddy Kinetic energy transferring warm, salty water from the Indian Ocean into the Atlantic Ocean in the vicinity of the west coast of South Africa. The mooring was designed by Eduardo Jardim and deployed by Dr Guillame Novelli and Prof Yueng Djern-Lenn. Processing institution was Prifysgol Bangor, carried out by Dr Natasha Sarah Lucas, as part of the NERC Discovery Science grant NE/X006468/1 titled "QUICCHE: Quantifying Interocean fluxes in the Cape Cauldron Hotspot of Eddy kinetic energy". |
