Description
Summary

To study the reproductive ability of the white-tailed sea eagle population on the Swedish Baltic Coast as a measurement of environmental quality. Feeding on fish as well as fish-eating birds, the sea-eagle is at the very top of the Baltic Sea ecosystem. Consequently, the levels of organochlorine pollutants such as DDTs and PCBs in sea eagles are among the highest recorded in organisms from the Baltic and in the world. A strong decrease in the reproductive ability of sea eagles on the Swedish coast was observed from the early 1960s and has been back-tracked to the early 1950s. This was the first alarm connected with the effects of persistent pollutants in the Baltic. Brood size and % breeding success are precisely measured in the sea eagle population and are powerful parameters in order to detect deviations from the natural background levels (derived from historical records).
