Description
Summary

Airborne radioactivity measurements are made on the Solway coast and in other areas in Dumfries and Galloway using a geiger-counter. Currently, measurements are made every two months at fifty different locations, although both the number of monitoring locations and frequency of monitoring are subject to review. Various samples of food and environmental materials are taken and submitted to Glasgow Scientific Services for assay for man-made radionuclides. Approximately 100 samples are taken per year, 40 of which comprise samples of sea-water, coastal sediment, shellfish, seaweed and coastal grass (number of samples subject to review).
