Description
Summary

Field visits over a twenty year period by various groups, all led by staff from the Cornish Biological Records Unit (CBRU). Used the methodology and field cards designed and produced by the South West Marine Biology Studies Group (see Field Studies Council Publication M3). Recorded approximately 100 sites along the Cornish coast, covering the majority of the Marine Areas. The following were recorded: a) dominant type of shore; b) secondary features - boulders, cobbles etc; c) habitats; d) slope; e) wave exposure; f) pools; g) fucoid cover; h) pelvetia; i) ascophyllum; j) kelps; k) lithothamnion; l) limpets; m) barnacles; n) top shells; o) periwinkles; p) mussels; q) activity (human) - bait, fishing; r) number of species (estimate): plants and animals; s) number of individuals (estimate). Photographs were taken of each stretch of coast, and any pictures/illustrations also collected from various sources. Each survey has a written report giving all the information listed above, as well as a description of the area and the species lists (all species lists have been transferred into a computerised database). Used quadrats to make maximum counts of selected species groups (e.g. limpets, sea anemones). Some reports include compilations of previous surveys. Certain species collected were sent to national specialist records, as appropriate. Only confirmed records were included.
