Objectives and Narrative |
SME 862 is a combined geology/biology science cruise on the vessel RRS James Clark Ross to the South Georgia region of the Scotia Sea. It was combined with a logistic visit to the UK Antarctic research station, Rothera. The geology work formed 8 days of the cruise time and was followed by 19 days biology work which undertook the Western Core Box survey to determine the distribution and biomass of krill northwest of South Georgia, refurbished the biological moorings in the South Georgia region and carried out a series of stations across Polar front in the Scotia Sea. In addition 1 days work was undertaken to support an FCO request for photographic samples collected to provide evidence for marine protected area work at South Georgia.
SME966: The main objectives of the cruise were to map the seafloor around the termination of the extinct West Scotia Ridge and extend the bathymetric coverage of the area. This would be accompanied by the dredging of the flanks of the W7 segment of the West Scotia Ridge to help understand the mantle flow regime that developed during the opening of the Scotia Sea. Following the completion of the West Scotia Ridge work the cruise would focus on the continental crustal blocks of the North Scotia Ridge and undertake detailed bathymetry work to identify dredge sites for sampling. The sampling would be used to understand the provenance of the crustal blocks and their uplift history during the development of the Scotia Plate. Following completion of the dredging work, a final bathymetry survey would attempt to complete the data coverage to the southwest of the South Georgia crustal block. |
