Objectives and Narrative Last of a series of four cruises carried out in the northern North Sea between September and November 1998 as part of the EU MAST III project PROVESS (PROcesses of Vertical Exchanges in Shelf Seas). The cruise objectives were:
1- to study benthic exchanges of nutrients and dissolved oxygen
2- to study the in situ particle sizes of suspended particulate matter
3- to deploy, turn round and recover moorings and bottom frames deployed during cruise Valdivia VA174 and Pelagia PE125
4- to study the water column properties by obtaining CTD profiles and water samples.
The cruise was split into two legs, from Greenock to Peterhead (21 to 30 October) and from Peterhead to Southampton (30 October to 11 November). During both legs, the main study site was located in the vicinity of 59 deg 20' N, 1 deg E.
