Cruise Inventory Information

Long name RV Pelagia (64PE) cruise PE123
Short name PE123
Objectives and Narrative OMEBEN-EXPEDITION. Projects OMEX-II, ALIPOR and BENGAL.

To study the distribution and activity of sea floor communities off NW Spain and the sediment concentrations of organic matter and biomarkers. Revisited 3 stations: the 2200m OMEX stations, the abyssal plain off La Coruna and Galicia Bank. Instruments that had been moored on a previous cruise were retrieved and re-deployed. Sediment samples at these and other locations were collected for spatial and temporal pigment biomarker variation. Visited a 4800m deep location on the Porcupine abyssal plain, temporal variation of the food supply and activity of the abyssal benthic community. A high resolution time series of measurements compiled of water column property and benthic community parameters. The respiratory activity of the benthic community is measured in-situ by bottom landers. 5 bottom landers deployed and took sediment and bottom-water samples. 2 hauls were made with a underwater video-trawl which filmed the sea floor and yielded tissue samples of holothurians for biochemical parameter analysis.

At each station a CTD profile of the water column and bottom water samples were collected for oxygen determination. 10 litres of bottom water were filtered for phytopigment analysis. Sediment samples were collected with a multi-corer for the analysis of: phytopigments, oxygen porewater profiles and porosity. Sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) was measured in-situ with the ALBEX bottom lander. The ALBEX lander carries a sediment trap with built-in fluorometer. Megafauna was collected and the small-scale topography of the sea floor was recorded with a video-Agassiz trawl.
