BODC Cruise Metadata Report for FRV Clupea (74CU) cruise 0705C

Introduction

This report collates information from the BODC cruise inventory and oceanographic databases. It presents

Cruise Inventory Information

Long name FRV Clupea (74CU) cruise 0705C
Short name 0705C
Objectives and Narrative 1. To carry out a demersal trawl survey to determine the abundance and distribution of whiting, haddock and cod, the main fish predators of sandeels. At each trawl station the length frequency of all fish species caught will be determined. Sub-samples of the three gadoids will be weighed to determine length-weight relationships. Otoliths will be taken to determine age composition. Stomach samples will be collected to establish diet and food consumption rates, and livers and gonads will be removed to determine Hepato- and Gonado- Somatic Indices. (Any sandeels and clupeid fish caught during the demersal trawling will be worked up to determine length frequency distributions, length-weight relationships and age composition.)
2. To determine spatial variation in water temperature and salinity across the Wee Bankie/Marr Bank study area using a Seabird CTD sampler. Approximately 40 vertical dip stations will be sampled utilising the demersal trawl stations and additional locations mid-way between the trawl stations.
3. To undertake an acoustic survey of sandeels and clupeid fish in the water column using 38 and 120 kH. Concentrations of fish will be sampled using the pelagic trawl. Species composition and length frequency distributions of fish caught will be determined. Sub samples will be weighed and their otoliths removed to establish length-weight relationships and age composition.
4. To conduct a RoxAnn survey of the substrate in the study area to investigate variation in the sandbank structure between this and previous cruises.
5. To conduct a survey of seabirds using the study area, to determine their abundance and distribution, using standard census methods.
6. To record all sightings of marine mammals (number of animals, species if possible, and their location) observed during the course of the cruise.

Cruise Inventory Datasets

Physical oceanography
CTD stations Quantity: number of stations = 44
Description: Hydrographic stations. All work undertaken between 0400 and 1600 BST. CTD deployed close to the seabed.
Biology and fisheries
Birds Quantity: activity duration in days = 5
Description: 6 Transects covered. Seabird survey work. All work undertaken between 0400 and 1600 BST. Seabird survey data was aggregated over the same five minute periods of acoustic integration to allow direct comparison of predator abundance and prey density.
Demersal fish Quantity: number of stations = 19
Description: Dermersal stations. All work undertaken between 0400 and 1600 BST. A Jackson Rockhopper demersal trawl gear (BT 158) with 10 mm codend mesh was deployed at each station. The total numbers and length of all species in the catch was determined. Samples of herring, sprats, sandeels, whiting, haddock and cod were weighted to determine length-weight relationships and otoliths of herring, sprats, and sandeels were collected to determine age at length keys. Samples of whiting and haddock were retained and frozen for dietry analysis at the laboratory. Samples of gurnard were also collected.
Mammals and reptiles Quantity: number of observations = 17
Description: Marine mammel sightings. 13 Grey Seals, 2 Minke Whales, 1 Porpoise, 1 Common Seal
Pelagic fish Quantity: activity duration in days = 5
Description: 6 Transects covered. Acoustic survey work. All work undertaken between 0400 and 1600 BST. Acoustic data were integrated over 5 minute periods. Concentrations of fish in the water column were sampled by pelagic trawl to determine species and length composition. The total catch of each species was determined. Length stratified samples of Clupeids and Sandeels were measured and weighted to establish weight-length relationships. Otoliths were also taken from these samples.
Phytoplankton pigs (eg chlorophyll, fluorescence) Quantity: number of samples = 44
Description: 500 ml water samples were collected at each hydrographic station for subsequent chlorophyll analysis to calibrate the fluorometer. Reverser bottle used.
