AMT1 pigment composition by HPLC analysis from CTD bottle samples

Data Acquisition and Analysis

Fresh seawater samples from upto five light depths were collected from 23 casts during the cruise. For each sample 2 litres of seawater were filtered through GF/F filters. All samples and replicates were preserved in liquid nitrogen and transported for post-cruise processing of pigment concentrations by HPLC.

BODC Data Processing Procedures

Data were submitted to BODC in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format on two occasions and saved to the archive with reference PML020061 and SOC020104. One file was provided to BODC with only sample ID and Julian Day (JD)/station number as metadata. The sample number appeared to be a concatenation of cruise number, JD and bottle sample (e.g. '1270pp1' being AMT1, JD/station 270 and sample 'pp1'). The depths sampled at each station were matched from the cruise report Table K1 by JD and 'pp1','pp2','pp3','pp4','pp5' respectively. Table K1 only provided 4 sample depths for stations on JD 284, 286 and 288. The missing depths were matched to the depth profiles provided in the Primary Production dataset from this cruise. The second file contained latitude and depth and the two sets of metadata were merged to complete the record.

Parameter codes defined in BODC parameter dictionary were assigned to the variables as shown in the table below. There were no details of the pigment concentration units supplied in or with the file. Comparison with subsequent AMT cruise HPLC pigment datasets indicates the data were provided in mg m -3 units. These data were converted to ng l -1 for all parameters but chlorophyll-a.
