SIMORC Total Indonesia Tide Gauge Data Narrative
Narrative
RBR Ltd TGR1050 tide gauges were deployed on the Sisi and Tunu 1,2 and 3 moorings, Indonesia. No data was recovered from the tide gauge at Tunu 3, so the pressure data from an Aquadopp current meter was substituted.
Data Quality Information
The tide data from the Sisi tide gauge shows a datum shift on 25th September 2008 at approximately 17:30. It is possible that the mooring slipped.
Data Access Policy
SIMORC data access conditions
The data collated and held at BODC on behalf of the SIMORC project are restricted. However, the data will be available to download from the Official SIMORC Website, as part of the project protocol. The data set will initially include data from the oil companies TOTAL, Shell and BP.
Narrative Documents
Nortek Aquadopp Open Water Current Meter
This instrument provides 3D acoustic doppler current measurements along with standard measurements of temperature, pressure, tilt and direction. It can be used in real time measurement situations or can log to an internal recorder powered by internal batteries. It can also be configured to measure surface wave height, period and direction concurrently. It has the unique feature of being run in 'diagnostic' mode when set to collect data at 1 Hz frequency in user specified intervals. This allows studies of mooring motion and the performance of other current meters to be conducted. It can be set in various configurations with titanium housings for deployment at greater depths.
Standard Measured Parameters
- 3D current velocity (East/North/Up, X/Y/Z or Beam 1/2/3)
- Acoustic signal strength (Beam 1/2/3)
- Compass
- Tilt
- Temperature
- Pressure
- Battery voltage
- Status code
- Error code
Surface wave monitoring
The standard Aquadopp is suitable for measuring surface wave height, period, and direction, which are calculated using the PUV method whereby spectra are estimated based on a combination of the pressure signal recorded by the instrument (P) and two horizontal components of the wave orbital velocity (U and V). More specifically, the pressure signal is used to provide an estimate of the wave frequency spectrum. The energy in this spectrum is then used to estimate wave height and period. The measurements of the wave orbital velocities are used to provide an estimate of the wave direction. Since these estimates are based on the distribution of wave energy and are not direct measurements of the free surface, they should be considered inferred estimates.
Both the dynamic pressure and the orbital velocities are driven by surface waves. The signals that are associated with these properties are complicated by the fact that they attenuate (that is the signals are weaker) with depth. The exact behaviour of the attenuation is determined by the water depth and the wavelength being observed. The greater the water depth the greater the attenuation; likewise, the shorter the wavelength (or higher the frequency of the wave) the greater the attenuation for a given water depth. This means that the estimation of wave parameters is limited by both water depth and wave frequency.

Originator's Data Processing
Data processing
Tide gauge data were exported from RBR Ltd software, for the following processing:
- The record was truncated to exclude times pre and post deployment.
- Time was recorded in GMT.
- Checks were run for outliers in the height data. An automated check compared the median of 3 values with the centre point, allowing a tolerance of 30cm. Outliers were visually examined and flagged.
- Checks were then run for constant values for 3 or more consecutive datacycles.
- All flagged data were replaced with the Matlab NaN symbol, excluding them from further processing.
- No tide data was recovered from the RBR Ltd TGR1050 tide gauge at the Tunu 3 location. The pressure signal from the Nortek Aquadopp current meter was used instead.
BODC Processing
Data were received by BODC in CSV files. They were then reformatted to QXF format using BODC transfer function 422. The following table shows how the variables within the files were mapped to the appropriate BODC parameter codes:
Original parameter name | Original Units | Description | BODC Parameter Code | BODC Units | Comments |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
DATE | YYYY MM DD HH:MI:SS (GMT) | Date and time | AADYAA01 + AAFDZZ01 | Day number and day fraction (GMT) | Conversion by transfer |
HEIGHT | metres | Sea elevation relative to Mean Sea Level | ASLVMSPG | metres |
Following transfer to QXF, the data were screened using BODC's in-house visualisation software, EDSERPLO.
General Data Screening carried out by BODC
BODC screen both the series header qualifying information and the parameter values in the data cycles themselves.
Header information is inspected for:
- Irregularities such as unfeasible values
- Inconsistencies between related information, for example:
- Times for instrument deployment and for start/end of data series
- Length of record and the number of data cycles/cycle interval
- Parameters expected and the parameters actually present in the data cycles
- Originator's comments on meter/mooring performance and data quality
Documents are written by BODC highlighting irregularities which cannot be resolved.
Data cycles are inspected using time or depth series plots of all parameters. Currents are additionally inspected using vector scatter plots and time series plots of North and East velocity components. These presentations undergo intrinsic and extrinsic screening to detect infeasible values within the data cycles themselves and inconsistencies as seen when comparing characteristics of adjacent data sets displaced with respect to depth, position or time. Values suspected of being of non-oceanographic origin may be tagged with the BODC flag denoting suspect value; the data values will not be altered.
The following types of irregularity, each relying on visual detection in the plot, are amongst those which may be flagged as suspect:
- Spurious data at the start or end of the record.
- Obvious spikes occurring in periods free from meteorological disturbance.
- A sequence of constant values in consecutive data cycles.
If a large percentage of the data is affected by irregularities then a Problem Report will be written rather than flagging the individual suspect values. Problem Reports are also used to highlight irregularities seen in the graphical data presentations.
Inconsistencies between the characteristics of the data set and those of its neighbours are sought and, where necessary, documented. This covers inconsistencies such as the following:
- Maximum and minimum values of parameters (spikes excluded).
- The occurrence of meteorological events.
This intrinsic and extrinsic screening of the parameter values seeks to confirm the qualifying information and the source laboratory's comments on the series. In screening and collating information, every care is taken to ensure that errors of BODC making are not introduced.
Project Information
System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities (SIMORC)
The EU-funded SIMORC project is a collaborative effort between MARIS (Netherlands), BODC (UK), the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and IOC-IODE to provide a harmonised and quality controlled metocean data set from data collected by oil and gas producers, accessible through the SIMORC protocol.
