Problem Reports

The directional energy density data submitted to BODC purported to be in mm2/Hz/cycle but the range of values was impossibly high. Therefore, these values were divided by an arbitrary value of 108 to bring them to an acceptable range of values for units of m2/Hz/cycle. It cannot be guaranteed therefore, that these values are actually in units of m2/Hz/cycle.

SIMORC data access conditions

The data collated and held at BODC on behalf of the SIMORC project are restricted. However, the data will be available to download from the Official SIMORC Website, as part of the project protocol. The data set will initially include data from the oil companies TOTAL, Shell and BP.

RD instrument Workhorse ADCP self contained and wave processing

The Workhorse ADPC self contained 1200, 600, 300 khz ADCP are a current profiler and is easily upgraded to include pressure, bottom tracking, and/or directional wave measurement.

Manufacturer Specifications

The basic principle behind wave the measurement, is that the wave orbital velocities below the surface can be measured by the highly accurate ADCP. The ADCP is bottom mounted, upward facing and has a pressure sensor for measuring tide and mean water depth. Time series of velocities are accumulated and from these time series, velocity power spectra are calculated. To get a surface height spectrum the velocity spectrum is translated to surface displacement using linear wave kinematics. The depth of each bin measured and the total water depth are used to calculate this translation. To calculate directional spectra phase information must be preserved. Each bin in each beam is considered to be an independent sensor in an array. The cross-spectrum is then calculated between each sensor and every other sensor in the array. The result is a cross-spectral matrix that contains phase information in the path between each sensor and every other sensor at each frequency band. The cross-spectrum at a particular frequency is linearly related to the directional spectrum at a particular frequency. By inverting this forward relation we solve for the directional spectrum.

System of Industry Metocean data for the Offshore and Research Communities (SIMORC)

The EU-funded SIMORC project is a collaborative effort between MARIS (Netherlands), BODC (UK), the International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) and IOC-IODE to provide a harmonised and quality controlled metocean data set from data collected by oil and gas producers, accessible through the SIMORC protocol.
