Project Information

Joint Nutrient Study II (JoNuS)

Concerns by the scientific community about the impact of nutrient inputs to the sea; a lack of information on inputs from the UK and on the spatial and temporal distribution and cycling of nutrients in UK waters provided the impetus for the JoNuS project.

JoNuS sought to quantify the input of nitrogen, phosphorus and silicon from UK estuaries to the North Sea through a good understanding of the estuarine processes that control the flow of these nutrients. JoNuS I focussed on the Great Ouse/Wash and the Humber outflows however resources available were insufficient to examine the Thames, the second largest input of nutrients from England into the southern North Sea. JoNuS II concentrated its efforts on the Thames. Its specific objectives were:

  • To determine the magnitude and time variation of gross nutrient (N, P, Si) input to the heads of estuaries in the Thames and Wash catchment systems.
  • To determine and quantify the processes controlling the fluxes of nutrients through the Thames estuary system.
  • To determine the fluxes of nutrients through the Thames on a quantitative basis in order to determine the net input of nutrients to the sea.
  • To continue the monitoring of the intra- and inter-annual changes in nutrient concentration and distribution in the Wash.
  • To provide contrast to the two systems previously studied (Wash and Humber), in terms of the balance of nutrient inputs (urban waste water versus agriculture) and compare with a parallel study of two sites in the Irish Sea.

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) hosted the project, which involved scientists from CEFAS, the University of East Anglia, the University of Essex, the Southampton Oceanography Centre, (now the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton), the Department of Agriculture Northern Ireland and the National Rivers Authority (now the Environment Agency). It was funded by the then Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Department of Environment, now the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, and the National Rivers Authority.

The project ran from April 1996 to March 1999, with marine field data collection between April 1996 and March 1997. Data collection involved ship based surveys which were complemented by estuarine transects and specific process studies.
